Grape spoon sweet
Grape spoon dessert! The most simple, homemade, popular Greek spoon sweet served over greek yoghurt, with bread and butter, or with your coffee!
Greek spoon dessert is a traditional sweet offered in almost every single household in Greece. These desserts are very popular as they include many different fruit varieties and can store for a long period of time. They are often used as a welcome treat for guests or events as a homemade gift when placed in a jar.
Grape spoon dessert in Greek is known as Glyko tou koutaliou. Some varieties include orange, cherry, fig, and even walnut.
Grape spoon dessert is enjoyed over Greek yoghurt, as a topping for cheesecake or just on its own. Place 1-2 teaspoons on a plate and serve with a coffee.
500g seedless green grapes
500g sugar (use less if you don’t like it too sweet, 250g-350g sugar will still work)
1/2 cup water
1 sprig of rose geranium – arbaroriza in Greece – kiouli in Cyprus
Juice of 1 lemon
- Separate the grapes from the stalks and pick out any soft overripened grapes and discard.
- Wash the grapes very well and drain.
- Place the water in the bottom of a pot and then place the grapes and the sugar in alternating layers. After that, add the lemon juice and let it stand for a few hours so the grapes can release their juices.
- Place the pot on the stove and once it is warm use a spoon to stir carefully it so the sugar doesn’t stick to the bottom. After that, simmer for 40-45 minutes on very low heat with the lid on.
- Turn it off the heat and let it sit overnight covered with a tea towel. The next day brings it to the boil for 10 minutes to absorb excess fluid and bubble and then add the rose geranium a few minutes before.
- Finally, turn off the heat and cover it with a tea towel for a few hours before placing it into sterilised jars.
